A striking demolition project has been successfully completed at Cargill in Izegem. The historic twin truss bridges, which for many years linked the two sites across the Roeselare – Leie Canal, have been replaced by a new, central structure.
In collaboration with Vacomet Recycling and Galloo, a well-thought-out and circular approach was adopted, involving demolition from above and removal via the water. The old spans, each around 100 metres long, were safely cut into two sections whilst suspended. These were then loaded directly onto the Galloo barge and transported to Galloo in Ghent for recycling.
This method combined maximum safety, minimal disruption on both quays and a well-considered environmental approach. The result: a technically challenging project, carried out with a focus on sustainability.
