Sustainable transport by water

The Galloo I, one of two barges in Galloo’s own fleet, is 79 metres long. On board: recycled steel, travelling almost silently towards a second life.

Galloo has been using inland vessels for years to transport scrap metal and steel as renewable raw materials. Galloo transports more than 200,000 tonnes of scrap metal per year by water, the equivalent of more than 8,000 trucks!

Sustainable transport is an essential part of our commitment. After all, transport by water is efficient and better for the environment. Scrap metal is very suitable for transport by water, as it cannot spoil and is perfect for bulk transport. Galloo Gent, in the port of Ghent, is an important link in water transport as a hub between inland shipping and the export of scrap outside Europe. The new Galloo yard in Harnes (FR), which is being built on the banks of the Canal de la Deûle, is also fully in line with the strategy of making maximum use of inland shipping.
